It was a stroke of providence that Pope Francis’ World Day of Peace message was released the very day I sat down to write this appeal to you in support of the Catholic Climate Covenant’s prophetic work, which, in Pope Francis’ words, seeks to “establish the liberating justice of God” who “hears the plea of the poor and the cry of the earth.”

For several years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Covenant’s board chair. During that time, I witnessed with joy and gratitude the Covenant’s steady growth and transformative impact as it confronts, to again quote Francis, “environmental decay” and the “devastation to which the earth, our common home, has been subjected.”
I especially admire the Covenant’s leadership with the Vatican’s Laudato Si’ Action Platform, the Wholemakers curriculum, Earth Day and Feast of Saint Francis programs, the green energy projects led by Catholic Energies, its vibrant youth and young adult engagements, and its advocacy efforts to, as Pope Francis pleads, “denounce the many situations in which the earth is exploited.”

Pope Francis makes his World Day of Peace appeal at the beginning of the Jubilee Year — a year that will also mark the 10th publication anniversary of Laudato Si’, his social encyclical on creation care. Without a doubt, 2025 will offer Catholic Climate Covenant a renewed opportunity to celebrate the gift of God’s creation and renew its efforts to protect it.
As 2024 draws to a close, won’t you join me in supporting them?
