Honoring Indigenous Peoples on Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we pause to honor and reflect on the deep wisdom, culture, and resilience of Indigenous communities who have long been the stewards of our lands and waters. At Catholic Climate Covenant, we recognize the invaluable role that Indigenous peoples have played in safeguarding creation, living in harmony with the earth, and caring for it as God intended.

In a world that often prioritizes exploitation over stewardship, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, acknowledging their sacred relationship with the earth and their unwavering commitment to protecting our common home for future generations.

Pope Francis talks about the importance of the work and perspective of Indigenous peoples in his encyclical Laudato Si’:

“…It is essential to show special care for Indigenous communities and their cultural traditions. They are not merely one minority among others, but should be the principal dialogue partners, especially when large projects affecting their land are proposed. For them, land is not a commodity but rather a gift from God and from their ancestors who rest there, a sacred space with which they need to interact if they are to maintain their identity and values…” (Pope Francis, Laudato Si’, paragraph 146)

This day reminds us of the sacred responsibility we share to care for the earth and the vulnerable communities that call it home. As we honor Indigenous peoples today, let us also commit to the work of reconciliation, healing, and justice — both for the land and for all its people. May our collective efforts lead to a more just, sustainable, and loving world for all God’s children.
