Honor St. Pope John Paul II’s Legacy: Support Catholic Climate Covenant’s Mission to Care for Creation

On April 2, we mark the 20th anniversary of the death of St. Pope John Paul II — a towering figure whose teachings continue to inspire Catholics around the world. One of his most enduring legacies was his deep commitment to the care of God’s creation. St. Pope John Paul II was not only a spiritual leader, but also a passionate advocate for the environment, understanding that environmental stewardship is intrinsically linked to our faith and moral responsibility.

During his papacy, St. Pope John Paul II frequently spoke out on the importance of caring for the Earth. In his 1990 World Day of Peace message, he boldly declared, “The ecological crisis is a moral issue.” St. Pope John Paul II was a pioneer in the Church in creation care, going on to state in his 1990 World Day of Peace message that “The gradual depletion of the ozone layer and the related ‘greenhouse effect’ has now reached crisis proportions as a consequence of industrial growth, massive urban concentrations and vastly increased energy needs.”

He recognized that the degradation of the environment is not merely an environmental issue but a question of justice — especially for the poor and marginalized, who suffer most from the consequences of ecological neglect. His language is a direct precursor to Laudate Deum: On the Climate Crisis.

In 1999, St. John Paul II declared that “the Church has a responsibility towards creation.” He encouraged all people, particularly Catholics, to live in harmony with the Earth, reminding us that the environment is a gift from God, entrusted to our care. His papacy laid the groundwork for the Church’s modern engagement with environmental justice, helping to frame the theological and moral imperative for protecting our common home.

As we reflect on his legacy, we have an opportunity to continue the work he began. Catholic Climate Covenant, inspired by St. John Paul II’s call to action, is committed to promoting eco-conversion and advocating for environmental justice, while helping Catholic communities reduce their carbon footprints and take practical steps to address climate change. Whether it’s supporting youth-led climate action, educating on sustainable practices, or urging Church leaders to adopt greener policies, the Covenant’s work continues to honor the spirit of St. John Paul II’s environmental teachings.
