When Catholic Climate Covenant announced our Feast of St. Francis program, we encouraged our supporters to adapt the program to their needs and audience, as we do with every program.
Pat and Paul Kelly, members at St. Francis of Assisi in Raleigh, North Carolina, took that encouragement to heart when they worked with parochial school teachers to adapt the program at The Franciscan School.
“As members of (St. Francis of Assisi’s) Creation Care Ministry and Franciscan Community Garden leads, we shared (the Covenant’s) grades 2-5 Season of Creation curriculum with The Franciscan School’s 6th-grade science teacher, Karin Kuropas, and language arts teacher, Maureen McCann,” the Kellys wrote to the Covenant in an email.
The Kelly’s gave the program to Kuropas and McCann, who created this lesson plan for students at The Franciscan School.
After the lesson plan, sixth-grade classes participated in outdoor activities, working with teachers and garden volunteers to plant cool-weather vegetable seeds.
“A million thanks for your support as we take baby steps in caring for creation,” the Kellys wrote.
