You are invited to apply to attend a groundbreaking initiative, "Laudato Si' and the U.S. Catholic Church: A Conference Series on Our Common Home." The inaugural gathering will be held June 27-29, 2019 at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and is co-sponsored by Creighton University and Catholic Climate Covenant. This conference series will bring together current and potential U.S. Catholic leaders to convene, equip, and inspire them to more deeply integrate Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato Si' and its climate change teaching into the life and ministry of the U.S. Catholic Church.
As a supporter of The Covenant we strongly encourage you to apply to join us for the inaugural gathering of this conference series.
Participants will include bishops, priests, and women religious, diocesan and parish staff, liturgical coordinators, educators, non-profit leaders, and other ministry professionals. Together we will discern how to incorporate the encyclical more durably into eight ministerial areas or "tracks" of U.S. Catholic life: Adult Faith Formation; Advocacy; Creation Care Teams in Parishes, Schools, and Religious Orders; Energy Management; Higher Education; Liturgy; School Education; and Young Adult Ministry. Teams of three leaders from prominent U.S. Catholic organizations (e.g., U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) have committed to lead each track and facilitate ministry-specific breakout sessions about implementing Laudato Si'. After the conference, track leaders will work with Creighton faculty and Covenant staff to develop corresponding resources and implement strategies.
The commitment to this ambitious conference series is high. The Vatican's Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development is aware and supportive of our efforts. Most Reverend Robert W. McElroy, Bishop of San Diego, will deliver the inaugural opening keynote address. Leading Catholic scholars will offer plenary addresses on topics related to the implementation of Laudato Si'. Sr. Patricia Siemen, OP, JD Prioress of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, will give the inaugural closing keynote address.
Please click here to visit the Conference website, view the schedule and roster of speakers, and apply to attend this a limited event. The participant application deadline is April 1, however we encourage you to apply as soon as possible since there are a limited number of attendance spots available. We are grateful for your ongoing support of Catholic Climate Covenant and hope that you will consider applying to join us at Creighton University in June!
